Why Organic?
Conventional Agriculture vs. Organic Agriculture
In the late 1940šs, chemical-farming technology was born. Pesticides,
herbicides, & synthetic chemical fertilizers became widely available to
farmers . Pest & weeds were virtually eradicated, and crop yields soared.
The corn crop rose from about 26 bushels per acre in 1926 to 127 bushels per
acre in 1996.
Gradually, both insects & weeds became resistant to the chemicals. The
number of pesticides & herbicides increased, but so did the number of pests
& weeds. More powerful toxins were needed.
Many new agri-chemicals are indiscriminate, killing everything they
touch, including the microbiotic activity in the soil. The soil then
contributes very little to the plants- it is just a growing medium, without
fertility, nutrients, pest and disease resistance. These things must all be
added to the soil with synthetics, seriously affecting not only the crops
themselves, but the health of the soil and the ecosystem that supports plant
life & health.
Certified Organic food has no synthetic pesticides, herbicides,
preservatives, or additives, no GMO ingredients, and no irradiation in
growth or production. The result is better ecology- enriched, drought
resistant soil, less soil erosion, less groundwater pollution, improved farm
biodiversity......and tastier more nutritious food!
Millions are saying "NO" to pesticides, industrial agriculture- to the
idea that more and faster are things to strive for. There has been a very
noticeable growth in the organic food sector as consumers are beginning to
comprehend that their personal, family, and environment's health &
well-being are directly related to what they eat & drink.
Genetic Engineering
Genes from organisms of unrelated families are spliced together. For example, a haddock gene is inserted into the structure of a tomato plant to create the Flavr Savr Tomato. You do not really know what is in the food you eat with this technology. |
Fiddlers' Stand on GMO's
The effects of GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) on our food supply, our health, and on the ecosystem are unknown. In 1973, there were no GE (Genetically Engineered) products on our supermarket shelves. Now, an estmated 60% of our processed foods contain GE ingredients. It seems that each new GM product presents new and unique, and largely untested, issues of environmental impact, nutrition and food safety. Because there has not been any thorough examination of the benefits and risks associated with these crops, we strive to use no GMO's and we support legislation to require labeling of genetically modified foods.
8 Reasons to Eat Organic (there are
many, many, more!!)
- Organic food is not covered in a cocktail of poisonous chemicals.
- Organic food contains an average of 50% more vitamins, minerals, and micro-nutrients than conventionally-farmed foods.
- Eating organic is the only way to avoid genetically-modified food.
- Organically-grown food tastes better!
- Organic farms support and nurture our beautiful and diverse wildlife, while intensive-farming practices often lead to its extinction.
- Organic food is really not more expensive than intensely farmed foods, as we pay for conventional foods through our taxes to clean up the mess that agro-chemicals make in our natural water supply and environment.
- Organic farming is much more healthy for farm-workers. For farms that are involved in intensive farming, there is a much higher instance of cancer, respiratory disease and other major illnesses than in organic farms. Eating organic shows you care about the farmers!
- And if you simply like the idea of your children and grandchildren being able to visit the countryside and play in the forests and fields, go organic for the sake of all our futures.

Proud to be small!
Congress gives $25 billion a year to subsidize biotech and industrial
agriculture, while family farmers who are using organic and sustainable
practices are getting next to nothing- certainly aggravating and rather
ironic as organic farms contribute so much to our health & the health of the
planet. We are very proud of the integrity and purity of our production
techniques. We take great care in making high quality products. Speed and
high volume are not our goals.
Fiddler's Green Farm is a family business combining the energy, love,
and hard work of two Maine families. We make delicious cereals, pancake &
baking mixes. We offer many other organic products, which you will see here.
Our dedication is to produce and offer fine, wholesome foods that are
the best possible for you & for the environment. We can all make a
difference by choosing wholesome foods - good for our and our children's
bodies and souls, and for the earth. Please join us in this mission, and
CHOOSE ORGANIC!
